Plot: The movie is based on a man called Daniel Plainview. A silver prospector, who travels miles and miles alongwith his adopted son, in finding silver mines, and later oil. It is his story about how the California oil boom took place and how families survived, and how America came to be built. Besides the gold rush, the oil boom would add yet another chapter in history of America.
Why should you see this movie?
Well, firstly knowing that the movie won for the Best Actor award for Daniel Day Lewis and the Cinematographer, Paul Elswit. The movie is much much more. Simply Brilliant. Daniel Day Lewis fits the character to a T. It is impossible to recognise him till the end, for he stays true to his character. And never once do you realise that he is not being or faking it. The character of Daniel Plainview, being a rugged, rash, and a cold-blooded man, who knows only one thing in life. Whis is how to drill oil. The character has shades, never once of kindness. He is cruel, brutal, and an evil person. An apt businessman of yore. What's even interesting is Paul dano, if you happend to watch "Little Miss Sunshine", you'd be surprised to know he is the boy who pledges the vow of silence. A fantastic act by Paul, for he portrays the annoying priest, who steadfastly tries to impose religious blessings on Daniel Plainview's oil excavation site. What's even more interesting is how even years after, both Daniel and Paul keep crossing each other at various times in life. The movie is about, greed. It is about blood, but of others, and not his own..Not Plainview's. It is a story about a cruel man. It's about how people can take advantage of a situation and bluff you. It is all that, and when you sit quiet in contemplation, you realise that times in 1911, were just getting greedy. That's all.
All in all, a worth watch, for it portrays troubled times, anxiety, aspiration, religion, in a way that the era could never ignore, and it's an interesting movie, and one person to watch out for is Daniel Day Lewis. Bloody brilliant.
