The reader asks you to understand.
Quietly. Subtly. It asks forgiveness.
It condemns. It laughs at love. It mocks. It hurries to seek pardon for what it has done.
A young boy of 15 falls for a tram guard twice his age. They begin a secret love affair. The lover departs. The boy returns to law school only to find his lover in a trial, and as a defendant. He watches her get differential treatment for her so-called innocence. It is incredibly astonishing of how the movie brings out real empathy from us. We judge the character as human, and not as an absolute criminal. We give forgiveness but not in absolutes. We watch the movie end, as the boy opens up finally. As a closer. We all need it. In post-war germany, the scenes are different. The Germans are pointing towards Natsis. But how many were really acquitted? So many questions. So few trials. This one stands out. This one makes you get your opinions straightened out. In your face. You slowly fade.
